Gum Treatment
Periodontal disease
is a bacterial infection of the bone and gum tissue which surrounds each
tooth. Patients diagnosed with it are often surprised because they suffer
few symptoms, if any. In advanced stages, symptoms may include red, swollen
gums, halitosis, sensitive teeth or loose teeth.
Periodontal disease
progresses through several stages.
Healthy, pink
gums and teeth free of plaque can degenerate to red swollen gums and teeth
with plaque and calculus (tartar) present. This stage is called gingivitis.
If allowed to
worsen, it becomes periodontitis. At this stage, the gum starts to detach
and cause a "pocket" to develop. Pockets are filled with bacteria,
which produce toxins. Advanced periodontitis produces deeper pockets and
loosens teeth.
Early detection
is the key followed by treatment and regular dental check ups.
